Open Source Software to replace 'pay for' software

Open Source Software Alternatives

Power your PC with Open Source Software

In 2026, the open-source ecosystem has matured to the point where "alternatives" often rival or even surpass the features of their proprietary counterparts, especially regarding privacy and customization.

Below are the top-rated open-source alternatives for the most common software categories.

Note that some softwares shown here require payment for the full version. Most of them have a very generous free version.

Office & Productivity

LibreOffice: The gold standard for replacing Microsoft Office. It is fully compatible with .docx, .xlsx, and .pptx and recently added native Markdown support and significantly faster spreadsheet calculations.

OnlyOffice: A sleeker, web-focused alternative that is excellent for real-time collaboration. It's often used as a self-hosted replacement for Google Docs or Office 365.

Master PDF Editor 5: Master PDF Editor is straightforward, easy to use application for working with PDF documents equipped with powerful multi-purpose functionality. With Master PDF Editor you can easily view, create and modify PDF documents. The application enables you to merge several files into one, split a source document into multiple documents, and also to comment, sign and encrypt PDF files.

GnuCash: personal and small-business financial-accounting software, freely licensed under the GNU GPL and available for GNU/Linux, BSD, Solaris, Mac OS X and Microsoft Windows.

Designed to be easy to use, yet powerful and flexible, GnuCash allows you to track bank accounts, stocks, income and expenses. As quick and intuitive to use as a checkbook register, it is based on professional accounting principles to ensure balanced books and accurate reports.

Joplin: The premier alternative to Evernote or OneNote. It supports end-to-end encryption, Markdown, and syncs via various cloud services or your own server.

Creative & Design

GIMP & Krita: While GIMP remains the go-to for Photoshop-style photo manipulation, Krita has become the industry favorite for digital painting and 2D animation.

Inkscape: A professional-grade vector graphics tool to replace Adobe Illustrator.

Scribus: The primary open-source option for desktop publishing, replacing Adobe InDesign.

Blender: Not just for 3D; it has evolved into a powerhouse for video editing and 2D animation that rivals Adobe Premiere Pro.

Penpot: A web-based design and prototyping tool (like Figma) that uses SVG as its native file format, making it a favorite for developer-designer handoffs.

Cloud & System

MX Linux: is a family of operating systems built by users from Debian Stable repositories that are designed to combine elegant and efficient desktops with high stability and solid performance. MX's graphical tools provide an easy way to do a wide variety of tasks, while the Live USB and snapshot tools inherited from antiX add impressive portability and remastering capabilities. Extensive support is available through videos, documentation and a very friendly Forum.

Linux Mint / Zorin OS: For those moving away from Windows 11 or macOS. Linux Mint is praised for its stability and "traditional" feel, while Zorin OS (currently v18) offers a polished, modern interface that is very welcoming to Windows switchers.

Syncthing: open-source, continuous file synchronization program that allows you to sync files between two or more computers in real time.

Unlike cloud services like Google Drive or Dropbox, Syncthing is decentralized, meaning your data is never stored on a central server—it moves directly between your devices over your local network or the internet.

Core Features

Privacy & Security: All communication is encrypted using TLS, and because there is no central server, no third party has access to your files.

Cross-Platform: It runs on Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, and various BSD distributions. It is particularly popular for keeping folders in sync between a desktop and a mobile device or a home server.

Open Protocol: It uses the Block Exchange Protocol, which is fully documented and open for anyone to audit.

Version Control: It includes optional "File Versioning" (Trash Can, Simple, or Staggered) so you can recover previous versions of a file if it's accidentally deleted or changed.

Web-Based Interface: You manage it through a clean, responsive browser-based UI that shows real-time transfer speeds and connection status.

Why Use It?

It's the ideal choice for anyone who wants total ownership of their data. Since it doesn't rely on a "cloud," you aren't limited by storage quotas or monthly subscription fees—your only limit is the hard drive space on your own devices.

Nextcloud: A complete "Personal Cloud" replacement for Google Drive, Dropbox, and Google Calendar. It includes file syncing, contacts, and even built-in video calling.

KeepassXC: a Cross-platform Password Manager.

Let KeePassXC safely store your passwords and auto-fill them into your favorite apps, so you can forget all about them.

KeePassXC does the heavy lifting in a no-nonsense, ad-free, tracker-free, and cloud-free manner. Free and open source.

KeePassXC has been awarded a Security Visa by the French National Cybersecurity Agency (ANSSI).

Bitwarden: The leading open-source password manager to replace 1Password or LastPass. You can use their cloud or host your own vault for maximum security.

Communication

Element / Matrix: A secure, decentralized alternative to Slack or Microsoft Teams. It uses the Matrix protocol for end-to-end encrypted messaging.

Jitsi Meet: A browser-based video conferencing tool to replace Zoom. No account is required, and it's significantly more private.

Thunderbird: Recently overhauled with a modern UI, it remains the best open-source client for managing Outlook or Gmail accounts locally.

Linux uses enjoy thousands of free and open source softwares, some that are much better then the 'pay for' software they replace.

I personally use MX Linux as my daily driver along with free open source software (FOSS) and I couldn't be happier. Syncthing and KeepassXC keep my information and passwords up to date and secure since they are on my local storage only.

I still use some cloud storage but never use it for any of my private information. Mega is a good choice since they allow 20 GB on the free tier. They claim all files and transfers are secure.
